What Do You Stand For?

Recently FUSO was victim to an act of intolerance. A post on a Facebook page called USD Confessions attacked the Asian community at school. When it was apparent that this post was specifically attacking FUSO members, another comment was posted that referred to Filipinos as “the dirty Asians.”

Though this incident directly affected FUSO, things like these really do have an affect on everyone, regardless of who it may be directed to.

We don’t stand for this. This video response was put together in order to let the community know that FUSO does not stand for this kind of hate.
We hope that it becomes a collaborative effort in order for other community members to join in and say what they stand for.

What do you stand for?

Jose Antonio Vargas at the University of San Diego

Hello everyone!

As a part of LIFE week at the University of San Diego, Jose Vargas will be joining us for a discussion about immigration and re-defining the term “American.” He will be coming to:

USD’s Shiley Theater on Wednesday April 24th from 7-8:30PM.

Define American fin 2 (1)

Jose Antonio Vargas was recently featured on the front cover of time magazine, that was entitled: “We are ‘Americans.*’ … *Just not legally.”

g9510.20_Immigration.coverHe was born in the Philippines and later immigrated to the United States when he was 12. Since he moved here, he has become a journalist, multimedia storyteller, and the founder of the Define American campaign. Then in 2011, he revealed his status as being an “undocumented immigrant,” and has continued his immigration law advocacy ever since.

Please join the community at this extremely important (and FREE) discussion at USD. The discussion is open to the public.

Here’s a quick general synopsis of this year’s PCN:

This year, the student-written play “The Storybook” recounts the life of a Filipino-American, Cameron Reyes.  When Cameron starts telling the tales that he grew up with to his own son, he is able to remember how the values and lessons that he learned from the stories provided insight into how he should handle difficult situations regarding his own life.

Please invite all of your friends and family to join us in celebrating the Filipino Culture through the performing arts.

Thank you for joining FUSO at Ugnayan Conference! Now for PCN!

fusopcnThank you to all of our community members for joining FUSO at our 2nd Annual Ugnayan Conference! A special thank you to our founders, Dr. Juanita Nacu and JocBetham Tapahary for taking time out of their busy schedules to speak at our conference.

Now that Ugnayan Conference is over, FUSO will be hosting its annual Pilipino Culture Night (Also know as PCN).

PCN will be on Saturday March 16th, 2013 at the University of San Diego in Shiley Theater. The Pre-show will be at 5:30pm and the show will begin at 7:00pm.

If you are not familiar with what PCN is, it is a production that is written, produced and presented entirely by members of FUSO, that revolves around issues and topics that Filipino Americans face today.

This year’s PCN, “The Storybook” will be taking the values that we learn from Filipino folk stories and implementing them into modern situations.

Check out some videos from some of our past PCN’s!
